Top 4 Redwood City Dog Parks

1. Shore Dogs Park in Redwood Shores is a bit of a drive from 101 but it is totally enclosed and separates large dogs from small dogs since a lot of small dog owners are not comfortable with their dog playing with a larger breed.  The smaller dog park is much smaller but it does have lots of grass and a large tree for shade on hot days. The address is 1393 Radio Road.

2. Don’t know if you are aware but Redwood City has a new dog park located on Main Street in Redwood City.  It is an agility park with dirt so don’t expect a lot of grass.  If you have high energy dogs and know how to train them to run and do tricks, this is a great free park in which to do so!  The address is 1295 Main Street.

3. Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve on Edmonds Road in Redwood City is a primarily off lease reserve that is very large and has hiking trails.  There are mountain lion sightings so if you are apprehensive about that you may want to take your dogs to another park.  Your dogs will love it because they can run off leash and there is tons of land.  Only draw back is that if your dog does poop, there is no trash can or disposal area anywhere on the site.

4. Stulsaft Park located at 3700 Farm Hill Boulevard is a cute little park with several trails for the dogs.  It has a playground for the kids and you can let your dog off leash after you are away from where kids can play.  There is a cute little stream to walk past and even a swing over the stream to get you passed the water.  Careful though, there have been snakes in the area so make sure you stay on the trails.

Also, just a town over in San Carlos, there is a new dog park on the corner of San Carlos Avenue and Elm (basically City Hall).  The address is 1401 San Carlos Avenue.  The lot is about 1.3 acres and the city has invested quite a bit of money on this site so because the official dog park in San Carlos (Heather), is less than desirable for taking dogs.  Not a bad park but I did notice the the fence is not close to the ground so little stubborn dogs could crawl under so be watchful.  Opening day was held Monday, September 14, 2015.

My dogs love these parks and it is so much better than walking them on city streets.  Hope this is helpful to you for finding fun and safe places for your dogs.  Happy dog walking!

63% of the US Population Seeks Out Alternative Medicine but Doesn’t Tell Their MDs

According to Natural News, the majority of the United States from 50 and up do not mention that they are using alternative medicines with their MDs.  The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine along with the AARP did a survey and found that most americans keep quiet about alternative and natural medicines that they are partaking in.

Many health experts state that letting your MD know about other methods is necessary to prevent any conflicts between anyone that may be using Alternative medicine along with over the counter and prescription drugs.

In a survey of 1,559 people age 50 and older, 63% have sought out alternative care.

Among that 63%, 69% did not discuss their use of with their MD. The most popular alternative methods are massage therapy or chiropractic manipulation, and herbal or dietary supplements. Other types used included hypnosis, acupuncture and naturopathy.

The most common reason responders said talking about seeing an alternative provider never happens with their MD is simply because doctors never ask. Other reasons include about 30% may not know they should tell their MD.  17% believed their MD would not understand the subject and 12% stated that they thought the MD would discourage the use of the alternative practitioner.

“The fact is, most American adults use some form of alternative medicine. Reasons are because it’s safer, less expensive and more effective than the normal MD “drugs-and-surgery approach,” said consumer health advocate Mike Adams, author of numerous books on natural health. “One reason patients don’t discuss these therapies with their  MDs is, frankly, that many doctors are egotistical, closed to new ideas and even downright hostile when they learn that patients are educating themselves about health, nutrition and disease prevention. Doctors are being taken out of the loop because more and more people are seeing them as irrelevant to their health.”

Now as doctors we take an oath stating that we put our patient first and “do no harm.”  It is hard for me to figure out why MDs discourage patients from getting safe, natural care.  It may be because they are not well versed in what we do or that over the years older medical providers have said disparaging remarks.  In any case, patient should be offered every angle to get themselves well.

Chiropractic has a very high success rate, but in those cases where I can not help, I send them to someone who can.  Isn’t this what we are supposed to do as healthcare providers?  Hopefully everyone will start to recognize that every vocation has a place and learn how to use them.

20 Herbs That Can Help With Cancer

As I am getting older, I am hearing about a lot of diseases that my friends and family have and cancer is mentioned a lot.  So, in doing some research I have found the following information that may help. Here are some herbs that can help boost immunity, help with chemotherapy and just make your treatment work that much better.

1. Astragalus (Huang Qi): This is an Eastern Medicine Herb that boosts the immune system.  It stimulates interferon that is produced in the body.  It also helps the immune system identify defective cells.  The Anderson Cancer Centre conducted a research study that showed taking Astragalus during Radiotherapy doubled survival times.

2. Berberis Family (Podophyllum peltanum): Research has shown that it can be strong against Ovarian Cancer.

3. Bloodroot (Sanguinaria Canadensis): This has been shown to be effective against tumors (shrinking them).  Shown to be very effective with Sarcomas

4. Butchers Broom (Ruscus Aculeatus):  Tumor shrinking abilities and anti-oestrogenic (female hormone) abilities.  This is used for the treatment of breast cancer.

5. Cat’s Claw (Uncaria Tormentosa): A powerful immuno-stimulant.  It enhances phagocytosis which is when the white cell try and get rid of infections in the body.  Great when used with Astragalus, cur cumin and echinacea.  Research has shown that it can decrease tumor size, especially skin cancers.  It can also be helpful with side effects of chemo and radiotherapy.

6. Chaparral (Larrea mexicans): Boosts the immune system and can stop metastasis and reduce tumor size especially with breast cancer.   It is also an anti-oxidant and anti-microbial.

7. Curcumin (Turmeric): Has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects. Polyps and colon cancer can be shrunk and the blood supply which helps tumors grow can be decreased greatly with this herb.

8. Dang Shen Root (Codonopsis pilosula): This herb increases both white blood cell and red blood cell levels so it can be helpful with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

9. Echinacea: Enhances the immune System and is great for fighting off colds.  It has also been shown to help with brain tumors.

10. Feverfew:  More effective than the drug cytarabine in killing leukaemia cells.

11. Goldenseal: One cause of stomach cancer can be the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. This burrows into the mucous lining of the stomach to hide from gastric acids, and then causes irritation, acid reflux, ulcers and even cancer. Goldenseal paired with the mineral Bismuth, will kill Helicobacter pylori.

12. Milk Thistle: Known to be helpful to cleanse the liver but it is also helpful for protecting the liver during chemotherapy.

13. Pau D’ Arco: This is tree bark and an anti-cancer herb.  Strong anti-bacterial, anti-yeast and anti-microbal.  Immune strengthening abilities and seem to help in cases of blood and lymph cancers.

14. Red Clover: Helpful during Breast and prostate cancer treatment.  Active ingredient is Genistein which was called “the anti-Oestrogen” herb by Professor Powles of the Royal Marsden.

15. Sheep’s Sorrell: Used in Essiac (tea and supplement available in Canada) and other herbal remedies.  It is a cleanser and helps with tissue regeneration.  Some research has showed that it may normalize damage cells and tissue.  It can also be used for intestinal worms since it has been shown that they have no resistance to this herb.

16. Skull Cap (Scutellaria Barbata): Acts against many cancer types and especially lung, stomach and intestine cancer.

17.  Sutherlandia (Cancer Bush): This herb is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-fungal.  It does give a boost to the immune system and helps prevent necrosis or wasting of patients with cancer.

18. Thorowax/hares ear (bulpleurum scorzoneaefolium): Acts as a natural interferon and has been shown very useful with bone cancer.

19. Wheatgrass: On shot of wheatgrass can give 12 or more broccoli kilograms of chlorophyll.  It is a blood purifier and a liver and kidney cleanse.  After 2 weeks of daily use, blood and tissue oxygen increases as well as circulation.

20. Wormwood: Anti-malaria and anti-microbial/anti-yeast and is great with an anti-candida diet. Note: These are herbs and do have side effects and do sometimes conflict with pharmaceuticals.  Even so, the use herbs as a part of your integrative cancer-fighting program can be extremely helpful. They just might make a serious difference to your health. But please make sure you go to an expert medical herbalist for clear and informed advice.

Traffic Increasing in Redwood City, So Is The Bad Driving!

In a news article just published on August 24, 2015, bad driving is happening in Redwood City, and happening frequently.  In a time where startups and the population increasing in the area, people are in a rush.  Driving when in a rush causes people to take chances and speed, got through stop signs, and disobey traffic laws. One hot spot is Whipple and Veterans Boulevard where cars are going onto and coming off of highway 101.

KRON News employee Stanley Roberts went to Redwood City and witnessed broken laws and video taped several drivers receiving citations.  Some strange behaviors are recorded in his video showing several angry and disconnected reactions when being reprimanded by East Palo Alto police.

Bad turns, missing documents including drivers licenses, running through stop signs, backing up in the middle of an intersection and many other unsafe driving habits were recorded.   Bicycle riders are increasing in the area and it is key to follow driving laws so no one gets hurt.  Lets be careful out there and if your running late, please obey the laws to keep everyone safe.  Getting into an accident or receiving a ticket is time consuming so you will actually be later than if you just obey the traffic laws.

Here is the video in case you want to watch it.  KRON

Top 10 Chiropractic Medical Research Studies

Chiropractic care is not only beneficial to correct long term damage to your health because of stress, poor posture or trauma; it is also real HEALTH CARE.

In my opinion, no other health profession can prevent nerve to muscle diseases and disruptions in the body like chiropractic can!

If you think that only chiropractors realize how beneficial it is, here are some examples of research and studies from the medical community.

1. Chiropractors help with Sciatica

According to a clinical trial in 2014 by the European Spine Journal it uncovered how chiropractic care had a 72% success rate in treating sciatica cases and symptoms similar compared to the 20% success from physical therapy and 50% from corticosteroid injections.

2. Low Back Pain and Neck Pain

The British Medical Journal published a study performed in 2003. 183 patients with neck pain were randomly treated with manual therapy (chiropractic spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs) in a 52-week study.

The clinical outcome measures showed that chiropractic adjustments resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, total costs of the chiropractic-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care.

Another study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found patients with chronic low back pain that was treated by chiropractors showed greater improvement including patient satisfaction after one month of care than patients treated by family physicians.

56% of chiropractic patients reported that their low back pain was greatly improved opposed to 13%  of medical patients.  Nearly 1/3 of all medical patients reported that their pain was much worse.

NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine funded a study to test the effectiveness of different approaches for treating neck pain.  272 participants were separated into three groups that (A) received either spinal manipulative therapy from chiropractor, (B) receieved pain medication (over-the-counter pain relievers, narcotics and muscle relaxants) or (C) followed exercise recommendations.

After 3 months, about 57 % who received chiropractic care and 48% who exercised reported at least a 75% reduction in pain, compared to 33% of the people in the medication group. After one year, approximately 53% of the drug-free groups continued to report at least a 75% reduction in pain, compared to just 38% pain reduction among those who took medication.

3. Headaches (Tension and Migraine)

Headaches are commonly the top 5 reasons why someone seeks out a chiropractor.  There are over 230 peer-reviewed articles showing that chiropractors help stop, and decrease the headache symptoms worldwide.

A group trial study found that 22% of people who had chiropractic treatment saw the number of attacks drop by 90%. In that same study, 49% said they had a significant reduction in symptomatic pain.

With this and several other studies in mine, it is clear that headache relief for patients should include chiropractic care over the medical field.

4. Colic and Ear Infections

Scores of case studies have been documented and published showing that children suffering from ear infections (otitis media) acid reflux and colic have had almost complete relief after just a few visits.

The reasons for this vary, but one common theme is that nerves controlling the gut and brain are intricately connected to each other and are quite sensitive to neurological insult caused by vertebral subluxations.

5. Neurological Conditions

Exciting research is currently being conducted via upright MRI showing how upper cervical adjustments affect various brain-based conditions.

Not only are MRI scans revealing that cerebral spinal fluid and blood flow are markedly increased after a chiropractic adjustment, researchers are observing that cerebellar invagination (when the cerebellum drops down below the skull line) is being reversed and brain plaquing (common in multiple sclerosis) is disappearing!  This shows the power of what chiropractors do!

Montel Williams (TV host), was interviewed about his experience as a MS patient under chiropractic care. It changed his life and there are numerous videos showing his dramatic results.

6. Blood Pressure

George Bakris,  who is the world expert on hypertension, published a study in 2007 with researchers in the Human Journal of Hypertension.  They proved that having one upper cervical chiropractic adjustment had the same effect as taking two blood pressure-lowering drugs. Even more fascinating, the effects of just one adjustment lasted more than six months!

Compared to the placebo-treated patients, saw an average 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count) and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number).

Other studies have shown similar findings with hypotensive patients, and their low blood pressure was raised to normal levels after chiropractic care. This is exciting because it highlights the body’s ability to create a homeostatic balanced environment once vertebral subluxations are removed. This is what DD Palmer was talking about when chiropractic was discovered in 1895.

7. Surgery Prevention

Chiropractic is always a good step to take if a patient has been referred for back surgery.

Now the Journal of the American Medical Association just published its low back pain guidelines and suggested that people suffering from back pain first try chiropractic before resorting to surgery.  This is not widely known by the public but should be so that many people avoid unecessary surgery and remain mobile and pain free.

8. Frozen Shoulder

Clinical trials have been published showing how patients suffering from frozen shoulder responded to chiropractic care.

Of the 50 patients: 16 resolved completely; 25 showed 75% to 90% improvement; eight showed 50% to 75% improvement; and one showed 0 percent to 50 percent improvement.

9. Scoliosis

Chiropractic adjustments for scoliosis coupled with muscular rehabilitation techniques may help prevent the progression of scoliosis. There are several trials out there that show significant improvements in the Cobb x-ray line which shows the angles of scoliosis several years after receiving chiropractic care.

10. Athletic Performance

Many athletes like Michael Phelps, Jerry Rice and Joe Montana have been under regular chiropractic care during and after their career.  In fact, over 50% of NFL teams have a chiropractor on staff.  It is now common for most athletic teams to have a chiropractor on hand to help with injuries and rehabilitation.   Studies have shown that chiropractic:

  • Reduces inflammatory cytokines
  • Boosts your immune system
  • Enhances pulmonary function
  • Decreases mental and oxidative stress
  • Relieves muscle tension
  • And can naturally increase your energy level

Studies have even proved, objectively and subjectively, that chiropractic patients experience “overall increased bodily function,” which includes bowl regularity and mental clarity.

Basically, because it helps place your body in the position where it can heal itself, chiropractic adjustments can free your immune system up to focus on keeping you healthy, which enhances your ability to think, move and perform.

Think chiropractic is just for neck and back pain….it can help but it is for allowing your body to use its innate capabilities and heal all on its own!

Myths Regarding Stroke and a Chiropractic Adjustment

After a Chiropractor evaluates a patient and determines the patient is a candidate for chiropractic care, treatments are administered.  There is a lot of myths out there regarding what happens after an adjustment so I wanted to set the record straight with what I have experienced as a patient and as a doctor.

The most common reaction to chiropractic care is relief.  After a first time patient comes in for care, approximately 35% have aching or soreness in the spinal joints or muscles the day after an adjustment.  65% feel some sort of relief.  If soreness does occur, it feels like you worked out and the muscles are sore.  This is because of slight inflammation that occurs after your body is treated and muscles and joints are now moving differently than they are used to.  This normally does not last more than 24 hours.  Ice is normally recommended in such cases and works great.  If the aching continues, contact the chiropractor and they will gently work on areas (probably muscle and tissue work with inflammatory work) and this should solve the problem.

  • One big myth regarding chiropractic care is a stroke or On “vascular accident”.  This I have never heard of in the chiropractic community and have never experienced as a patient.  This myth has been compared with primary care physician (PCP) visits and stroke. According to the authors of this particular study:
  • According to Cassidy J D, Boyle E, Cote P et al. Risk of Vertebral Stroke and Chiropractic Care, It has been discovered that:

1. There was “no evidence of excess risk of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic care compared to primary care.”

2. The alleged correlation more likely had to do with patients seeking chiropractic treatment of already-existing VBA symptoms (headache and neck pain) before the stroke took place.

In the hands of experienced chiropractors, cervical manipulation usually renders beneficial results with few adverse side effects.  If a person is at risk of having a stroke, turning their head quickly, putting their head in a sink at a hair salon or any slight movement of the head and neck could trigger a stroke. Chiropractic treatment is no more dangerous than a visit to their own medical doctor.

Chiropractic is not only safe, but there are several studies out there showing that it helps boost the immune system and lower blood pressure.  The myths about stroke and chiropractic are outdated and are quite damaging to the profession. There is no research out there showing that chiropractors cause patients to stroke.  As a matter of fact, our malpractice insurance is low because we don’t hurt people.
