Belmont Is putting new turf at Sports Complex

The city of Belmont is attempting to find a design firm to help them build a synthetic turf athletic field at the Sports Complex.  This project will cost around 2.5 million dollars.

This new field will include three soccer fields and will refurbish the softball and baseball fields as well as install energy efficient lights.

It should take around three months to select the proper company and the design is estimated to take about one year.

Belmont started to consider synthetic turf at the complex in 2009.  began considering synthetic turf at the complex, located on the east side of Highway 101, in 2009.   It has been debated since then.  It has been estimated that the city uses approximately 4.5 million gallons a year which means more than 12,000 gallons a day, to water the field.  Synthetic turf is estimated to be less expensive to maintain and allow for increased usage.  It will be easier to maintain and require less labor than real grass.

A synthetic turf field can mean an increase of up to 61 percent in playable hours.

If interested in knowing more, the Belmont City Council meets 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22 at City Hall, One Twin Pines Lane, Belmont.

Old Spaghetti Factory is coming to Redwood City!

This restaurant will occupy the intersection of Jefferson and Broadway right underneath the Century Cinema. This should be a great way to get something to eat before or after your movie. There is plenty of parking underground and Caltrain is only a few blocks away.

Not everyone is happy about the new addition though. During a recent City Council meeting, many people argued there are too many restaurants in the area and not enough retail stores. The mayor disagrees. He believes that the more businesses surround themselves with other good businesses, it can only be successful for everyone.

Lets all welcome them to the area!

Is Swimming good for back pain?

In many cases, swimming can be a very helpful exercise for back pain sufferers.  Athletes commonly become injured and swimming is a great way to keep active without putting excess strain on a swimmers back.  However, that is not to say that swimming can’t cause back pain or injuries as well.

Sometimes lower back pain can be caused from swimming when the muscles in the lower back become hyper extended, or over stretched, during the breaststroke or other forward stokes. In addition to hyper extension of the lower back, the cervical spine, or upper spine and neck, can also become injured while swimming. Repetitive jerking motions of the head during frontward stokes could also seriously injure the area.

The neck and cervical spine are particularly prone to injury while swimming. The anatomy of this area of the spine is very complex and is composed of seven vertebrae surrounding the spinal cord, which extends downward from the brain. Stretching outward from the spinal cord are nerves which travel to muscles and other tissue throughout the body.

To prevent back pain while swimming, it’s crucial that you use proper form and techniques. Unnatural or awkward movements while swimming can easily damage tissue through the back, so it’s important to maintain the correct stokes and movements. In addition, swimming with sidestrokes or backstrokes can also minimize stress on the back when compared with frontward strokes. When doing the front crawl or other forward strokes, make sure to roll your body when taking a breath and avoid jerking the head backwards so that you can reduce strain on the neck. Using a snorkel can also help reduce the awkward movement of the neck by reducing the need to adjust the head when taking breaths. Wearing a mask or goggles can also reduce unintentionally jerky head movements while trying to get water out of the eyes. Boards, life vests, or other types of floatation devices can also help maintain proper form while swimming.

If you are actively involved with swimming and are experiencing neck or back pain, seek the advice of a coach or more experienced swimmer. If they spot you while swimming, they may be able to determine if something is wrong with your stroke and can advise you on proper technique.

Specific swimming strokes can cause their own unique back injury problems. Here are some items to be aware of when doing certain strokes:

  • For the freestyle, make sure you do not rotate your head too much when taking breaths. In addition, do not let your head move up too much or deviate from the axis along the length of the body. Deviating from this axis, or over rotating the head, can easily lead to neck and back injury while swimming. Also, when you’re not going up for breathes make sure you keep your head looking downwards. As already mentioned, rolling too much can easily lead to damage.
  • With the backstroke, muscles along the front of the neck tend to become fatigued if you have not done that stoke in a long time. Make sure to ease into this stoke and avoid over doing it.
  • When doing any flipturns, tuck your head in and don’t have it extended outward from your body.
  • For the breaststroke, keep your head and neck still, while gently raising the head and back to take breathes.

When back pain becomes a problem there are several methods to help relieve discomfort:

  • Stretching, icing, and using over the counter medications such as ibuprofen are also very conservative ways to help reduce discomfort with mild cases of back pain.
  • However, with more serious pain, more serious forms of treatment may be required and seeking the help of a chiropractor or physical therapist may be more beneficial. With chiropractic manipulations, pain can often be relieved in many instances, but not necessarily for everyone.
  • Physical therapy is a common treatment for back pain ailments. Physical therapists design specific exercises and routines that are intended to both strengthen the tissue in the back while increasing flexibility, helping to minimize back pain.
  • Back braces are also a common way to treat back pain since they help to limit awkward movements and aid in the treatment of injured tissue.

If swimming continues to be painful it’s important to stop and seek the advice of a physician in order to stop back pain. By continuing to swim despite continual or worsening pain, the condition affecting the back may become worse and more serious forms of treatment may be required to reverse discomfort. Only in rare cases is surgery required to reverse ailments that affect the back. However, there are still instances where surgery may not be enough to completely reverse back pain conditions.

In many cases, swimming can actually help back pain. Swimming is an activity that is good for you, and it also does not usually strain or add significant weight to the back. This makes it a great alternative for those looking for an exercise that won’t aggravate their neck or back, as well as any other conditions that may be affecting their bodies. However, repetitive or awkward movements in the pool can lead to injury, so it’s important to learn the proper safety methods and techniques to avoid injury to the back

Stress study shows low level work noise can decrease work productivity

According to an article written by the Journal of Applied Psychology in October of 2000,

Environmental psychologists at Cornell University discovered that low-level noise experienced while at work results in higher levels of stress and lowers productivity.

“Forty experienced female clerical workers (average age 37) were assigned for three hours to either a quiet office or one with low-intensity office noise (including speech). The workers in the noisy office experienced significantly higher levels of stress (as measured by urinary epinephrine, a stress hormone), made 40% fewer attempts to solve an unsolvable puzzle, and made only half as many ergonomic adjustments to their workstations, compared to their colleagues in quiet offices”.

The workers did not report feeling higher levels of stress because of the increased noise.  People may be becoming used to feeling stress in their lives and not feeling the effects until high levels accumulate in the body causing physical or emotional symptoms.

One psychologist reported that “even low levels of noise can have a potentially stressful effect”.

It is very important to relieve stress in your life.  The 3 stresses in our lives are chemical, emotional and physical.  If not alleviated from your system, it will start to accumulate and show ill effects on the body.  Some examples of long term stress are posture issues, headaches, pain, numbness, sleep disturbances, irritability.  Making sure you get plenty of exercise, meditation/breath work and eating properly can greatly reduce stress on the body.  Take care of yourself and your body will reward you!

To HCG or Not: Dr. Oz says Not Yet

The HCG, or “Hormone” Diet

The HCG diet promises to help you lose weight quickly. While many claim it works, it has a potentially damaging effect on your metabolism.

The diet is based on the properties of HCG, or human chorionic gonadatropin. This hormone is produced during pregnancy, so pregnant women can use the right kind of fat when burning off calories.

The HCG diet pills contain small doses of HCG which are advertised by those promoting the HCG diet as helping your body tap into stored fat and burn it off. They also advertise that HCG suppresses your appetite so you can consume as little as 500 calories a day. Initially, this diet may help you rapidly drop pounds — as any diet dropping your calorie intake will do. Ultimately, it destroys your metabolism, as you are essentially starving yourself. Another negative side effect is the loss of muscle mass, so much that you will no longer be able to effectively burn calories.

If you’re looking to naturally suppress your appetite, Dr. Oz recommends using the four Fs: fiber, fish, fowl and good fats – like walnuts and flaxseed.

I have been hearing a lot about the HCG diet on television and in articles.  It seems strange to me how easily people will inject substances into their body without really understanding the consequences.  Also, eating only 500 calories a day can’t be good for you.  It is recommended to always keep at least 1,200 calories in your body per day to make sure you have the proper amount of nutrition your body needs to function.  I went to Dr. Oz’s website to see what he thinks about it and I agree with his findings:

Most of this is directly from Dr. Oz’s  web site:

Which of the below statements is true about the hCG diet?

  • You can lose 30 pounds in one month.
  • Many dieters swear by it.
  • Doctors say it doesn’t work.
  • The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calls hCG supplements illegal and fraudulent.

What’s remarkable is that all these statements are true. Let’s take a close look at the hCG diet to separate fact from fiction.

What is the hCG diet?
The hCG diet combines extreme calorie restriction with daily shots of a hormone produced by pregnant women called human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG).

How much can you eat on the hCG diet?
Very little. The hCG diet requires that you eat only 500 calories a day. You would hit your daily limit with one turkey sandwich with Swiss cheese and mayo. Any diet that limits you to 500 calories a day is unhealthy, but will work, since starving yourself has always been a way to loose weight, but has also always been a really, really bad idea.

Can you lose a lot of weight on the hCG diet?
Yes. If you don’t eat, you’ll lose weight. Skipping meals and extreme restriction of food has been used by dieters for decades to try to lose weight. If you stick to a diet of only 500 calories a day, it’s possible to lose 5 or more pounds a week. But, again, starving yourself is NEVER a good idea.

If you lose weight fast, then why don’t doctors recommend it?
You don’t keep the weight off. Decades of research have demonstrated that if you diet by eating only 500 calories a day, you regain a lot of weight after the diet ends. It turns out that these crash diets lead to no more weight loss after one year than if you modestly reduce calories and increase exercise.

It’s unsafe. Common sense tells us that starving is not very good for our bodies. Your mom probably have told you this. Scientists have also proven this.  If you only eat 500 calories a day, there are serious health risks.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has investigated over a dozen deaths linked to very low calorie diets as far back as the 1970s. While dieters are unlikely to die from a limited duration hCG diet, the diet is long enough to lead to other health problems like hair loss, constipation and gallstones – a painful condition that often requires surgery.

What about the hCG injections – doesn’t that make the diet more effective?
No. Promoters of the hCG diet claim that when people are injected with hCG hormone they don’t feel hungry even though they’re not eating. The idea of using hCG injections to curb appetite was introduced over 50 years ago and has been carefully studied in over a dozen well-done trials. Every single well-done trial showed that the hCG injections were no better than injecting a salt-water placebo. In other words, people injected with hCG lost the same amount of weight as people injected with a salt-water placebo.

If hCG injections don’t make you lose more weight, do they make the diet safer? Unfortunately, the injections don’t make starving yourself any safer and, in fact, might make it more dangerous. Since the use of hCG has been shown to be no better than salt-water injections for weight loss, it is not used by mainstream physicians for weight loss. Therefore the safety of injecting a pregnancy hormone into women (and men!) when they are eating so few calories has never been studied. Although hCG injections could have long-term health effects, the truth is that we just don’t know.

People on the hCG diet say they don’t feel hungry. If it doesn’t work, how can that be?
It turns out that when it comes to hunger, humans are very suggestible. Probably earlier this week you weren’t at all hungry until someone starting talking about a favorite food or you lost your appetite at the sight of unappealing food. When we want to believe that a shot, whether it’s of saltwater or hormones, will make our hunger go away, our hunger sometimes does go away. The placebo effect is as effective for helping one not feel hungy.

Does it really matter if it’s the medicine or the power of suggestion? If the shot helps with dieting, isn’t it worth a try?
The extreme calorie restriction is known to cause serious health problems and the safety of hCG injections in this setting is completely unknown.

Do hCG drops work?
hCG is sold in stores and on the Internet as drops. Injecting over a hundred international units of hCG is not proven to work for weight loss. Similarly, drops which barely contain any hCG do not work either.

Are hCG drops legal?
No. The hormone hCG has never been approved to be in any product sold directly to consumers. The leader of the FDA’s Internet and Fraud Team has said all such products are illegal.

I’ve heard that a physician is providing the hCG shots for weight loss. Is that legal?
Yes. After the FDA approves medications for one indication (for example, hCG is approved for treating infertility), physicians can use approved medications in any way they wish. So, even though all studies show that it doesn’t work, physicians can still legally inject anyone with hCG. While the overwhelming majority of physicians would not give someone a medicine that has been proven to be ineffective, you can find physicians willing to compromise their ethics.

If I’m experiencing negative side effects from the HCG diet, what should I do?

  • Stop the diet if you haven’t already.
  • Inform your personal physician.
  • Inform the FDA.

Use your common sense when it comes to new fads like this.  Does it sound normal to lose that much weight so quickly?  Eating 500 calories a day does not sound right.  Our bodies need nutrients and we are not getting proper amounts when taking in only 500 calories a day.  Also, how can anyone find the energy to work out after only eating 500 calories?

I understand we all want things to happen quickly but learning how to change your lifestyle by eating healthy and exercising will keep your risk of heart disease and other physiological problems down and keep you slim at the same time.

Graston (S.A.S.T.M) and Active Release Technique

Active Release Technique (A.R.T.) is becoming very popular in body work.  Chiropractors and massage therapists are increasing its use for their clients.  It gets good results but I prefer to use Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (S.A.S.T.M.) in my practice.  I know, it is a mouthful, but it gets great results and it’s easy on the practitioner.   Both methods focus on releasing adhesions accumulated in the body and allow for proper healing and movement.

One big difference I like about S.A.S.T.M., is that the patient does not have to move the effected body part while instruments are supplied.  Sometimes a patient can barely move because of tightness or pain so why traumatize the area more when you don’t have to.  This method allows the patient to lay on the table and relax while the treatment is applied.   S.A.S.T.M. is also not painful like A.R.T.  I am sure you have heard the phrase “no pain, no gain” right?  Well in this case that phrase doesn’t apply.  There is no pain, but lots of gain!  I personally think that is a good thing.

Here is what happens during a session of S.A.S.T.M.  Carefully crafted instruments are applied to the area of scar tissue and with gentle pressure strokes over the area, they release scar tissue and knots that are stored in the body and cause dysfunction and/or pain.  After the application, patients feel less stress on the area, increased blood flow and better movement.

Another great feature with using S.A.S.T.M., is that the practitioner does not injure or strain their thumbs.  I have several chiropractic friends that tell me their thumbs are killing them after a busy day of A.R.T.  This does not happen with these special instruments.

If you have gotten A.R.T. in the past, try Graston or S.A.S.T.M.  You will feel great afterward!

And so, Tom Luce decided it was time to put down his paint brush. Since that beginning, Luce has toured constantly and released three full length CD’s including a recent “pay what you want” acoustic EP on their new label, Ninth Street Opus. Luce works hard to keep their live show fresh by constantly incorporating new material and new ways to engage their audience.  And as far as painting houses goes, “I miss that sometimes” he says.  “But I guess I’ve really just switched from paint brushes to guitars”.

Spinal and Extremity Care

Chiropractors are masters of the spine and nervous system.  We tract and follow symptomatic patterns in the body and relieve stressors in these areas which allow the body to function at its highest level.  Did you know that we can affect any joint in the body?  Yes! Its true!  Some chiropractors believe that the whole body including your hands, feet, shoulders etc. are all involved in symptomatic problems in the body.

Everyone has heard about the kinetic chain we have on our bodies.  Remember the song…hand bones connected to the wrist bone, the wrist bones connected to the elbow bone?  Well, chiropractors certified in chiropractic extremities by the Council of Extremity Adjusting believes this to be true.

Everything is connected so after we adjust the spine, we make sure the other areas of the body are addressed to make sure they don’t affect the movement and function of your body.

I am the only chiropractor in the San Mateo County area that is certified by the CEA to adjust ribs, arms, legs, shoulders, feet and address TMJ problems.  If you have any problem in your body, we can help!

Dizziness, Vertigo and Meniere’s Disease

Dizziness, Vertigo and Meniere’s Disease Can Be Treated with a Chiropractic Adjustment!

Meniere’s Disease is vertigo or dizziness that is associated with an inner ear disorder.  Fluid builds up in the inner ear that eventually bursts and affects surrounding areas of the ear and causes vertigo and other damage to occur. Treatment usually involves reduction of alcohol usage, and restrictions on salt, caffeine and potassium in the diet.

A new study reported in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation shows that dizziness or vertigo problems are caused by a Vertebral Subluxation (misalignment of the spinal column).

Dizziness/vertigo/meniere’s  is relieved by a specific adjustment of the misaligned cervical spinal bone.  This allows the inner ear to drain properly and stop the affects of being off balance.

If you suffer from dizziness, vertigo or Meniere’s disease, I urge you to see a local chiropractor. If you live in San Mateo County, call 650.353.1133. Dr. Amie Gregory, a Redwood City, California Chiropractor at Precise Moves Chiropractic has had great success with many patients who suffered with vertigo and dizziness!
