Belmont Is putting new turf at Sports Complex

The city of Belmont is attempting to find a design firm to help them build a synthetic turf athletic field at the Sports Complex.  This project will cost around 2.5 million dollars.

This new field will include three soccer fields and will refurbish the softball and baseball fields as well as install energy efficient lights.

It should take around three months to select the proper company and the design is estimated to take about one year.

Belmont started to consider synthetic turf at the complex in 2009.  began considering synthetic turf at the complex, located on the east side of Highway 101, in 2009.   It has been debated since then.  It has been estimated that the city uses approximately 4.5 million gallons a year which means more than 12,000 gallons a day, to water the field.  Synthetic turf is estimated to be less expensive to maintain and allow for increased usage.  It will be easier to maintain and require less labor than real grass.

A synthetic turf field can mean an increase of up to 61 percent in playable hours.

If interested in knowing more, the Belmont City Council meets 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22 at City Hall, One Twin Pines Lane, Belmont.

Bicycle Safety Tips & Workshops

Summer is almost here, which means it is time to check your breaks, inflate your tires and lubricate your chain. You’ll be pulling out your bicycle helmet too, I’m sure, but what else can you do to keep yourself safe as the you ride this summer.

Well, here’s where you can find out!

Free Bicycle Safety Workshops at four Peninsula library branches and one community center. If you register before the workshop, you’ll be entered to win a $25 gift card from a local bike shop.

The 90-minute workshop will include information on current traffic laws for bicyclists and drivers, Bike to Work Day 2010, bicycle maintenance, maps and safety booklets.  Visit
“Safe Bicycling in San Mateo County” for a practical guide in biking to work, or combining public transit and biking to work.
For more information, email: [email protected]

In the meantime, here are some great bicycle safety times.

1. Get a rear light. If you’re riding at night, use a flashing red rear light. Bike shops have red rear blink lights for less than $15. If you already have one, make sure the batteries are working!

2. Wear a reflective vest or a safety triangle. High quality reflective gear that you can get at any bike shop  makes youmore visible, even in the day time. When you hear a car/truck approaching, straighten up to make your reflective gear more noticeable.

3. Choose wide streets. Ride on streets whose outside lane is wide enough that it can fit both a car and your bike side by side. That way a car may speed past you and avoid hitting you, even if they didn’t see you!

4. Choose slow streets. The slower a car is going, the more time the driver has to see you.

5. Use back streets on weekends. Because some people still drink and drive, it’s safer to ride along neighborhood streets..

6. Get a mirror. Get a mirror and use it. If it looks like a car doesn’t see you, hop off your bike and onto the sidewalk. Mirrors cost $5-15.

7. Don’t hug the curb. Allow space between yourself and the curb so you have someplace to go to avoid getting hit. This also enables turning across or from your lane to better see you.

2010 Census: Get Counted!

The Census Bureau is preparing for the upcoming Census that will be conducted throughout the United States in 2010.  Mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the Census is taken every 10 years and is a count of everyone living in the United States, citizen or not.

Everyone must be counted, including people of all ages, races, ethnic groups, citizens, and non-citizens.  The Census is conducted to apportion Congressional seats and determine the distribution of Federal funds to local and State governments, affecting the daily lives of residents through funding for essential services.

Everyone is required by law to participate and the Census form only takes about 10 minutes to complete.  Federal law protects the personal information you share during the Census count from being used for any other purpose.  The confidential information provided in the Census on the new shorter questionnaires will provide an accurate picture of the community in the year 2010.

San Carlos, RedwoodCity, Belmont, and the County of San Mateo need YOUR help to ensure everyone is counted in the next Census.  A questionnaire will be sent to your address for you to fill out and mail back by April 2010.  It is safe, easy, and critically important for every city in San Mateo County, the County, and the United States.

Information and assistance is available!

Each city is working with agencies in the region including the U.S. Census Office, San Mateo County, and the State of California to ensure that all residents are counted.  Information and Census questionnaire assistance is available in a variety of forms and languages.  For more information, stay tuned to www.cityofsancarlos.org, call (650) 802-4263, or visit the following websites:
