3 Phases Of Chiropractic Care… What Are They?

Most patients that see me for the first time usually have symptoms. I know that the major goal at that point is to GETTING out of pain but what about STAYING out of pain?

There are 3 phases of care that people must go through to make sure you don’t get back in pain and can live life without major restrictions.

1. Relief Care: This phase provides temporary relief of your symptoms. Normally, when a patient is in this phase and get relief it is because inflammation is decreased and joint function is restored through spinal adjustments.  Ice, heat or cold laser may also be used to help the symptoms start to subside.   However, symptom relief is likely to be temporary if the underlying cause is not addressed after the pain subsides. In many cases the cause of your symptoms are improper body mechanics, repetitive movements, micro-trauma or postural issues that need to be rectified before real change can occur. Faulty muscle patterns consisting of weak or overly tight muscles need to be addressed and monitored for lasting results.

2. Corrective Care: This phase takes longer because it addresses the cause of the issue that is normally a long term problem. Progress is analyzed and care is modified depending on consistent results. Some people respond quicker than others depending on the condition and integrity of the spinal column, the age and physical condition of the patient, the severity of the injury and the duration of the problem.  Consistency without exacerbation of the original issue is tracked as well as anything that may hinder your progress. Stabilization is the goal.

Maintenance: This is what ensures optimal health and is the final stage of health. Day to day activities put biomechanical strain on our bodies. We are constantly exposed to stress and we must continue to monitor the health and condition of your spine through periodic evaluations to make sure that you don’t go back to the beginning.  Regular chiropractic adjustments will help insure you are living at your optimum level of health and function.

The benefits of maintenance care are that minor misalignments can be detected before they become symptomatic or well-established. We have specialized tests to track the spinal column, muscles and organs to make sure you maintain health and can track any issues that may be festering and ready to become problematic. Maintenance chiropractic care allows for improved posture, enhanced function, better athletic performance, reduced injuries and an overall enjoyable pain-free lifestyle.  This type of preventative or wellness care can also save time and money by keeping minor problems from becoming more serious and preventing you from starting back from scratch.

Pregnancy: What To Expect In The First Trimester

Chiropractic care is very helpful during pregnancy and especially if your baby is breech.  Keeping your pelvis aligned will allow your baby to have room in the uterus and keep the pelvic outlet open and unrestricted for an easier birth.

For new expectant mothers, pregnancy can be both exciting and scary.  This is because there are a lot of people telling you many things and you want to do the best for your new addition.

There will be changes in your body during this 9 month process and here are the most common ways your body will change.

1. Morning sickness: Around the 5th week of pregnancy you may feel nauseous.  Ginger tea, eating small meals and trigger point massage can help alleviate this.  This doesn’t only happen in the morning

2. Tender breasts: Breasts will become bigger, more tender and may even feel a bit tingly.  This happens around week 6.

3. Mood Changes:  Normally around week 7, little things may set you off that may have not before.  It is okay, hormones are changing in the body and it is something that will come up on you when you least expect it.

You may also experience heartburn, constipation, food cravings, taking a disliking to foods that you never have before, headaches.

Weight of the baby at this point is pretty small so you may only gain 3 to 4 pounds.  You may even crave food a bit less and lose a couple pounds.  That is not out of the ordinary and you should not be alarmed.  Your weight should start to increase the second and third trimester.

Light meals such as avacados, bananas, crackers, bread will help keep your weight up.

Things to look out for:  Risk of miscarriage is the highest in the first trimester.  Here are some symptoms to look out for to call your Obstetrician:

Heavy vaginal bleeding
Severe abdominal pain
Sudden immense thirst
Painful urination
Fever (over 101.5), chills or backache
Severe puffiness of the hands and face
Vision problems.

If you experience any of the above symptoms, call your Obstetrician’s office right away. If you don’t get someone on the phone within a few minutes, head to the nearest ER.

How To Find A Chiropractor in Redwood City, CA

Choosing a chiropractor can be hard especially with all the different types of techniques out there.  There are many misconceptions about chiropractors that have been in the media for years and many people have fears or apprehensions about visiting a chiropractor even when they are so uncomfortable it is hard to bear the pain.

Here are some things to look for when deciding on a chiropractor in Redwood City or any place for that matter.

1. Do they perform treatment on the first visit: Most people seeking chiropractors are in pain and in a lot of cases they have waited until it is unbearable. Of course when coming in there have to be exams performed, questions asked and tests to be done to see what is going on. I am a firm believer in treating patients when they come in. I can’t just let them leave with no treatment and in pain and dis-ease knowing that my treatment would help them greatly. Yes, data needs to be taken but in my office and I do many tests to confirm that treatment is necessary and it is safe.

I also have a machine that pretty much shows me what is going on quickly so I can administer a safe and effective adjustment to the patient and perform any tissue work that may be needed. Again, why have a patient wait and come back tomorrow when they have come in and need help now.

Even if a patient has been in a car accident, I can still work on the tissue and perform cold laser to help with pain.

2. How much time is spent with the doctor: Typically the first appointment is pretty long since the doctor needs to get all information gathered, do testing and answer any questions you may have. After the testing is done, the doctor pretty much ready and knows what to do and can safely administer treatment. After a treatment plan is figured out the doctor doesn’t need to spend another hour with you at each session, they just need to follow up with you and figure out any tweaks that need to be done as far as exercises, posture and lifestyle adjustments. They also need to check in and see how things are progressing with you.

Note: every time you see a chiropractor they are examining the spine when they are touching you. There is a “mini” exam each time you come in.

Chiropractors know how the body is supposed to look, feel and function. We are experts at this and it doesn’t take us long to figure things out. 5 to 15 minute treatment times are enough to find out what is going on, feel the spine, administer treatment along with any soft tissue concerns.

Often times patients qualify the time spent with the doctor in calculating the price. This is not always the case. There are some doctors that have quick analysis and have been working with patients a long time while others will spend time hooked up to a machine or on a massager. Modalities do have you in the office longer but treatment time with the doctor is usually 5-15 minutes just like a medical doctor.

I take a “hands on” approach with care and if there is anything to do with you personally, I am in the room with you the whole time and answer any questions you would like addressed at that time. I want to make sure you are taken care of and have all of your needs met.

3. Once you go to a chiropractor you have to go for the rest of your life:
Your health is up to you. Your brain and spinal cord run and coordinate everything in your body and in my opinion, it is critical and important to keep them working efficiently even in the absence of pain. As you know, you always FEEL great until you don’t. You don’t always know what is lingering until a symptom occurs. Well, keeping your body functioning well will keep you healthy and prevent a lot of sickness and discomfort from ailing you.

If there is a time where you have symptoms and are unconfortable, just like dieting, exercising, learning a new hobby it all takes time. Changing or maintaining optimal lifestyle patterns really determine how well your body functions. If you have very little emotional stress in your life, eat healthy and don’t have athletic injuries or repetitive movements you will need care less.

If you have higher levels of stress it will probably require more visits to keep your body functioning well. With this said, the choice is up to you if you want to continue with care. Most patients that do continue understand that it is beneficial for their health and are determined to stay as healthy as possible However, it is your health and your decision.

4. Are x-rays necessary?: Sometimes. Here are some examples of when an x-ray is necessary:

A. Significant traumatic injury (especially if over 50 years old)
B. If patient has had pain for long extended periods of time that has NOT responded to care. This is to rule out any pathologies that may be there that need to be addressed.

Note: many chiropractors do not have an x-ray machine in the office. We do not have one at our facility but will refer you out to a radiologist who can perform your xray and create a report for viewing.

5. Do I just go in for care or do I have a plan like when you go to a physical therapist?
Well, at our facility we give exercises, talk about ergonomics, nutrition and lifestyle changes. You have your homework and a lot of the exercises are similar to Physical Therapists. If you do decide you want to see one, we can work together. We will keep you aligned and functioning properly to get the most out of your physical therapy. Your muscles and bones are attached and need to work properly to get the most out of your exercises.

6. What other work is performed as part of my chiropractic treatment?
There are many forms of treatment out there but we like to think that our method gets fast results because we work on the joints, soft tissue and nerves. We perform an adjustment to the joints (this can be spinal or extremities) and work on soft tissue with our SASTM tools (A Graston Technique) if it is necessary during your visit. If there is pain or inflammation, Cold Laser is used to provide some relief so you can move and function as pain free as possible.

We cover the whole body at our office and want to make sure you feel happy and satisfied.  We would love to be the place you call first, before surgery or taking medications that can have ill effects on the body and have side effects. Start with us first, if it doesn’t work for you, the other options will always be there.

9 Reasons Why You Don’t Get A Flu Shot!

www.precisemoves.com/images/flu%20shot.jpg” width=”438″ height=”292″ />Flu symptoms are not fun and most of us don’t want to lose work because we are home with the flu and if we have families, it can be transmitted back and forth easily.  There are numerous ways to boost your immune system preventing the flu and many other health issues.

Flu shots make a lot of money in the winter months…it is very lucrative for the companies that make this vaccine.

Many medical experts now agree it is more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu vaccine than the flu itself.   I know….this does not show up on the signs at Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy.

Here are some of the Cons of getting a flu shot:

1.) Lack of real evidence:   It has not been proven that young children benefit from flu shots at all.  A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found that the flu vaccine is any more than a placebo. Each flu shot is only for a particular strain so it only protects against that strain of the virus.  It does not mean you won’t be at risk for other strains.

2.) Medical journals have published thousands of articles revealing that injecting vaccines can actually lead to serious health problems.  this includes harmful immunological responses and several other infections.

3.) The flu is now injected into the body:  Introducing this vaccine to the body now creates symptoms of running noses, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchiolitis within days or weeks of getting the virus.  It has also been shown to lower the immune system leading to higher risk of coming up with other symptoms.

4.) The Flu vaccines contain mercury:  This is hazardous to the body and actually decrease synapses of the nerves.  Mercury toxicity can cause memory loss, depression, ADD, oral issues, digestive and respiratory problems and cardiovascular diseases and many more health impairments.

5.) New evidence has shown the flu shots can cause Alzheimer’s disease:  One report shows that people who received the flu vaccine each year for 3 to 5 years had a 10-fold greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease than people who did not have any flu shots.  Again it has been shown that the immune system is negatively impacted leading to the bodies in ability to fight infections and leading to less than desirable health.  Flu shots to the elderly population can have dangerous consequences.

So what does the CDC say about flu shots and can this data be trusted?

6.) Well, not entirely.  The Center for Disease Control appoints a 15-member Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).  This committee is responsible for deciding who should be vaccinated each year.  Almost all the ACIP have a financial interest in immunizations.  Why would they want data to show that vaccines are not needed?  It is not profitable for them.  This creates a lot of doubt about why these shots are actually needed.

7.) Research shows that over-use of the flu-vaccine can actually alter flu viruses and cause them to mutate into a more dangerous strain.

8.) Ingredients in flu vaccinations can cause serious neurological disorders.  In many cases, flu vaccines contain harmful ingredients like detergent, mercury, formaldehyde, and strains of live flu virus. Does this sound healthy and natural to you?

9.) What strain is used?  Each year is a educated guess as to what strain is going to be used.   Getting several different flu shots for different strains will start to get dangerous with the addition of multiple toxins being introduced to the body.

Flu shots are indeed more dangerous than you could think, and it is best to rely on natural ways to protect against the flu rather than getting yourself vaccinated.  Chiropractic is commonly used to boost the immune system and keep the body healthy and able to fight dis-ease and symptoms.

Remember that drugs make billions of dollars each year and that cures are not happening the way they used to because it is not profitable to cure a problem, only keep it at bay with a pharmaceutical.

6 Foods That Decrease Inflammation

Foods that fight inflammation

Doctors are learning that one of the best ways to decrease inflammation in the body is not through a drug, but in foods.

As you may know, your immune system recognizes and attacks anything that is recognizes as a threat to your body (antigen).  This can be something natural or unnatural.  When it attacks, it involves inflammation.

However, sometimes inflammation lasts days, weeks, even years when the body is irritated with foods that are pesticide ridden or not nutritious.  This is when inflammation occurs, day in and day out, even when you are not threatened by a foreign invader. That’s when inflammation is your enemy. Many major diseases that you hear about including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and Alzheimer’ have been linked to chronic inflammation.

One of the most powerful tools to decrease inflammation does not come from a drug, but from the grocery store.  There have been many books and research showing that certain foods keep inflammation down in the body.  and now Dr. Frank Hu of Harvard states that “Many experimental studies have shown that components of foods or beverages may have anti-inflammatory effects.”

Choose the right foods, and you may be able to reduce your risk of illness and disease.   Pick the wrong ones, and you could accelerate the inflammation in your body and start the disease process.

So what foods inflame the body?

  • The “bad” carbohydrates, such as white bread, pastries, pasta (anything the body metabolizes as sugar)
  • French fries and other fried foods
  • Soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages (again…sugar)
  • red meat (burgers, steaks) and processed meat (hot dogs, sausage)
  • margarine, shortening, and lard

Inflammation-promoting foods

So, it should make sense that all of the foods that cause inflammation also are bad for us.

“Some of the foods that have been associated with an increased risk for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease are also associated with excess inflammation,” Dr. Hu says. “It’s not surprising, since inflammation is an important underlying mechanism for the development of these diseases.”

Unhealthy foods also lead to gaining weight as well so people that are obese are also highly inflammed.

Foods that decrease inflammation

Include plenty of these anti-inflammatory foods in your diet:

  • tomatoes
  • olive oil
  • green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and collards
  • nuts like almonds and walnuts
  • Salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines
  • fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and oranges. Highly acidic fruits like pineapple and mango should be eaten sparingly.

Anti-inflammation foods

On the flip side are foods and beverages that have been found to reduce the risk of inflammation, and with it, chronic disease, says Dr. Hu. He notes in particular fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, apples, and leafy greens that are high in natural antioxidants and polyphenols, which play a huge role in the prevention of disease.

Studies have also associated nuts with reduced markers of inflammation and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Coffee, which contains polyphenols and other anti-inflammatory compounds, may protect against inflammation, as well but make sure it is organic instead of sprayed with pesticides.

“A healthy diet is beneficial not only for reducing the risk of chronic diseases, but also for improving mood and overall quality of life,” Dr. Hu says.

I have to agree.  When I am eating my normal diet of salad, fruits, veggies and lean meats…my mood and energy levels are wonderful

How Healthy is Your Gut?

Scientists that were experimenting with fruit flies in order to try and understand how some people remain in good health well into old age are finding out that it might have something to do with the gut.

There have been other recent studies have also started linking diseases like diabetes and Parkinson’s to changes in a person’s gut bacteria. The cause of gut problems are vast and hard to find a cause to how this can happen. With age the number of bacterial cells increase and bacteria does change inside the gut.

Researchers used fruit flies because they have a very short life span. Normally they live for a period of about eight weeks and they are good to study because of the diverse ages at which they die.

“One of the big questions in the biology of aging relates to the large variation in how we age and how long we live,” Walker said.  In addition, scientists have managed to identify all of a fruit fly’s genes and are able to turn them on and off individually. That capability adds a number of variables to experiments and research.

According to Agence France-Presse:

“Springboarding off previous research in which they observed that the flies develop leaky guts within days before dying, they analyzed the gut bacteria  — collectively referred to as the microbiota — of more than 10,000 female flies.”

What they did was isolate distinct groups of flies.  Then they gave antibiotics to reduce the number of species found in the intestinal tract.  This resulted in improved digestive function as they aged.

“When we prevented the changes in the intestinal microbiota that were linked to the flies’ imminent death by feeding them antibiotics, we dramatically extended their lives and improved their health,” Walker told AFP.

Flies that were given antibiotics lived for an average of 20 days.  This is substantially longer than a normal flies lifespan.

Obviously Good Gut Health is important for a healthy body:

Working in conjunction with researchers from the Scripps Research Institute in Florida, a team took a large portion of flies that had no germs at all and whose guts were had no microbes. Those flies lived an average of 80 days or about 1.5 times longer than flies that had not been altered.

The study followed another in which researchers were able to map out how microbiota change over the course of a lifetime. The earlier study has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Cell Reports.

We all know that having a strong gut is the key for wellness.  In 2013, Natural News wrote an article which stated that researchers at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta were surprised to discover that healthy gut bacteria helped to regrow damaged intestinal tissues: Here is what they found:

Lactobacillus bacteria was observed to stimulate the production and cellular proliferation of NADPH oxidase 1 which serve as signaling messengers for the various systems of the body that regulate normal and healthy bodily physiology. Without these important messengers, the digestive system in particular will not work well and in a sense kind of go crazy.  This will result in metabolic and infectious disorders, allergies and gut conditions like inflammatory bowel disease.

Gut problems are increasing in our community because of unhealthy eating, pesticides in our food and processed or boxed foods.  Our guts try hard to stay healthy but long abuse of foods and internal toxins make their job difficult.  Please be good to your body and give it what it needs….fruits, vegetables and healthy fats.  It will fuel your body well!

10 Ways to Help with Insomnia

Insomnia is no fun.  Not getting enough sleep disturbs your concentration, slows down healing in the body and highly effects your mood.

Here are some suggestions for helping your get your Zs….

1. Take anything that is considered a stimulant out of your diet.  Coffee, teas, chocolate, sodas and energy drinks or powders.  If you need an energy drink for a workout, try and take them in the morning instead of later on in the day.

Unless you have Thyroid or Adrenal Fatigue, B vitamins are essential to the nervous system and low doses can interrupt your sleep.  Either eat foods high in vitamin B or take a natural supplement each day.  Also, get about 20 minutes of sun each day or take vitamin D.  Exercising at least 3 times per week should help as well.

There are several Herbal remedies for insomnia…

A. Tryptophan:  We require tryptophan in our body.  It is an amino acid that helps make serotonin and melatonin which help you sleep.  Tryptophan lengthens your sleep time and can also increase how alert you are after waking up.

B. Valerian Root: Best results are when used in a combination with melatonin or hops.  Recommended dosage is 400-500mg right before bed.

C. Melatonin: This is a hormone normally secreted by your pineal gland.  This will help you fall asleep.  Be careful though because nightmares may occur and you may be drowsy during the day.  Dosage range from 1 to 10mg.

D. Hops: This can improve sleep and helps in getting you to fall asleep.

E. Black Cohosh: This minimizes sleep interruptions and can decrease mood swings and your irritation levels.

F. Passion Flower: This helps to clear anxiety and relax the body.

G. Passion Flower: Takes care of anxiety and relaxes.

H. Ashwagandha: Blocks stress in the body and helps you relax.

I. Chamomile flower and leaf:  Decreases anxiety and can act like a sedative.

J. Skullcap: Helps with calmness and adaptability to stress.  It can also act like a sedative for pain and discomfort.

Getting outside and mediating can greatly help as well.  It helps reset your biological clock.  Having a sleep schedule works too.  If you go to bed at the same time each night, your body will get used to it and you will start to fall asleep easier.  Sleep is important, don’t take it for granted and try and decrease your caffeine intake.

63% of the US Population Seeks Out Alternative Medicine but Doesn’t Tell Their MDs

According to Natural News, the majority of the United States from 50 and up do not mention that they are using alternative medicines with their MDs.  The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine along with the AARP did a survey and found that most americans keep quiet about alternative and natural medicines that they are partaking in.

Many health experts state that letting your MD know about other methods is necessary to prevent any conflicts between anyone that may be using Alternative medicine along with over the counter and prescription drugs.

In a survey of 1,559 people age 50 and older, 63% have sought out alternative care.

Among that 63%, 69% did not discuss their use of with their MD. The most popular alternative methods are massage therapy or chiropractic manipulation, and herbal or dietary supplements. Other types used included hypnosis, acupuncture and naturopathy.

The most common reason responders said talking about seeing an alternative provider never happens with their MD is simply because doctors never ask. Other reasons include about 30% may not know they should tell their MD.  17% believed their MD would not understand the subject and 12% stated that they thought the MD would discourage the use of the alternative practitioner.

“The fact is, most American adults use some form of alternative medicine. Reasons are because it’s safer, less expensive and more effective than the normal MD “drugs-and-surgery approach,” said consumer health advocate Mike Adams, author of numerous books on natural health. “One reason patients don’t discuss these therapies with their  MDs is, frankly, that many doctors are egotistical, closed to new ideas and even downright hostile when they learn that patients are educating themselves about health, nutrition and disease prevention. Doctors are being taken out of the loop because more and more people are seeing them as irrelevant to their health.”

Now as doctors we take an oath stating that we put our patient first and “do no harm.”  It is hard for me to figure out why MDs discourage patients from getting safe, natural care.  It may be because they are not well versed in what we do or that over the years older medical providers have said disparaging remarks.  In any case, patient should be offered every angle to get themselves well.

Chiropractic has a very high success rate, but in those cases where I can not help, I send them to someone who can.  Isn’t this what we are supposed to do as healthcare providers?  Hopefully everyone will start to recognize that every vocation has a place and learn how to use them.

20 Herbs That Can Help With Cancer

As I am getting older, I am hearing about a lot of diseases that my friends and family have and cancer is mentioned a lot.  So, in doing some research I have found the following information that may help. Here are some herbs that can help boost immunity, help with chemotherapy and just make your treatment work that much better.

1. Astragalus (Huang Qi): This is an Eastern Medicine Herb that boosts the immune system.  It stimulates interferon that is produced in the body.  It also helps the immune system identify defective cells.  The Anderson Cancer Centre conducted a research study that showed taking Astragalus during Radiotherapy doubled survival times.

2. Berberis Family (Podophyllum peltanum): Research has shown that it can be strong against Ovarian Cancer.

3. Bloodroot (Sanguinaria Canadensis): This has been shown to be effective against tumors (shrinking them).  Shown to be very effective with Sarcomas

4. Butchers Broom (Ruscus Aculeatus):  Tumor shrinking abilities and anti-oestrogenic (female hormone) abilities.  This is used for the treatment of breast cancer.

5. Cat’s Claw (Uncaria Tormentosa): A powerful immuno-stimulant.  It enhances phagocytosis which is when the white cell try and get rid of infections in the body.  Great when used with Astragalus, cur cumin and echinacea.  Research has shown that it can decrease tumor size, especially skin cancers.  It can also be helpful with side effects of chemo and radiotherapy.

6. Chaparral (Larrea mexicans): Boosts the immune system and can stop metastasis and reduce tumor size especially with breast cancer.   It is also an anti-oxidant and anti-microbial.

7. Curcumin (Turmeric): Has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects. Polyps and colon cancer can be shrunk and the blood supply which helps tumors grow can be decreased greatly with this herb.

8. Dang Shen Root (Codonopsis pilosula): This herb increases both white blood cell and red blood cell levels so it can be helpful with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

9. Echinacea: Enhances the immune System and is great for fighting off colds.  It has also been shown to help with brain tumors.

10. Feverfew:  More effective than the drug cytarabine in killing leukaemia cells.

11. Goldenseal: One cause of stomach cancer can be the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. This burrows into the mucous lining of the stomach to hide from gastric acids, and then causes irritation, acid reflux, ulcers and even cancer. Goldenseal paired with the mineral Bismuth, will kill Helicobacter pylori.

12. Milk Thistle: Known to be helpful to cleanse the liver but it is also helpful for protecting the liver during chemotherapy.

13. Pau D’ Arco: This is tree bark and an anti-cancer herb.  Strong anti-bacterial, anti-yeast and anti-microbal.  Immune strengthening abilities and seem to help in cases of blood and lymph cancers.

14. Red Clover: Helpful during Breast and prostate cancer treatment.  Active ingredient is Genistein which was called “the anti-Oestrogen” herb by Professor Powles of the Royal Marsden.

15. Sheep’s Sorrell: Used in Essiac (tea and supplement available in Canada) and other herbal remedies.  It is a cleanser and helps with tissue regeneration.  Some research has showed that it may normalize damage cells and tissue.  It can also be used for intestinal worms since it has been shown that they have no resistance to this herb.

16. Skull Cap (Scutellaria Barbata): Acts against many cancer types and especially lung, stomach and intestine cancer.

17.  Sutherlandia (Cancer Bush): This herb is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-fungal.  It does give a boost to the immune system and helps prevent necrosis or wasting of patients with cancer.

18. Thorowax/hares ear (bulpleurum scorzoneaefolium): Acts as a natural interferon and has been shown very useful with bone cancer.

19. Wheatgrass: On shot of wheatgrass can give 12 or more broccoli kilograms of chlorophyll.  It is a blood purifier and a liver and kidney cleanse.  After 2 weeks of daily use, blood and tissue oxygen increases as well as circulation.

20. Wormwood: Anti-malaria and anti-microbial/anti-yeast and is great with an anti-candida diet. Note: These are herbs and do have side effects and do sometimes conflict with pharmaceuticals.  Even so, the use herbs as a part of your integrative cancer-fighting program can be extremely helpful. They just might make a serious difference to your health. But please make sure you go to an expert medical herbalist for clear and informed advice.

Top 10 Chiropractic Medical Research Studies

Chiropractic care is not only beneficial to correct long term damage to your health because of stress, poor posture or trauma; it is also real HEALTH CARE.

In my opinion, no other health profession can prevent nerve to muscle diseases and disruptions in the body like chiropractic can!

If you think that only chiropractors realize how beneficial it is, here are some examples of research and studies from the medical community.

1. Chiropractors help with Sciatica

According to a clinical trial in 2014 by the European Spine Journal it uncovered how chiropractic care had a 72% success rate in treating sciatica cases and symptoms similar compared to the 20% success from physical therapy and 50% from corticosteroid injections.

2. Low Back Pain and Neck Pain

The British Medical Journal published a study performed in 2003. 183 patients with neck pain were randomly treated with manual therapy (chiropractic spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs) in a 52-week study.

The clinical outcome measures showed that chiropractic adjustments resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, total costs of the chiropractic-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care.

Another study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found patients with chronic low back pain that was treated by chiropractors showed greater improvement including patient satisfaction after one month of care than patients treated by family physicians.

56% of chiropractic patients reported that their low back pain was greatly improved opposed to 13%  of medical patients.  Nearly 1/3 of all medical patients reported that their pain was much worse.

NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine funded a study to test the effectiveness of different approaches for treating neck pain.  272 participants were separated into three groups that (A) received either spinal manipulative therapy from chiropractor, (B) receieved pain medication (over-the-counter pain relievers, narcotics and muscle relaxants) or (C) followed exercise recommendations.

After 3 months, about 57 % who received chiropractic care and 48% who exercised reported at least a 75% reduction in pain, compared to 33% of the people in the medication group. After one year, approximately 53% of the drug-free groups continued to report at least a 75% reduction in pain, compared to just 38% pain reduction among those who took medication.

3. Headaches (Tension and Migraine)

Headaches are commonly the top 5 reasons why someone seeks out a chiropractor.  There are over 230 peer-reviewed articles showing that chiropractors help stop, and decrease the headache symptoms worldwide.

A group trial study found that 22% of people who had chiropractic treatment saw the number of attacks drop by 90%. In that same study, 49% said they had a significant reduction in symptomatic pain.

With this and several other studies in mine, it is clear that headache relief for patients should include chiropractic care over the medical field.

4. Colic and Ear Infections

Scores of case studies have been documented and published showing that children suffering from ear infections (otitis media) acid reflux and colic have had almost complete relief after just a few visits.

The reasons for this vary, but one common theme is that nerves controlling the gut and brain are intricately connected to each other and are quite sensitive to neurological insult caused by vertebral subluxations.

5. Neurological Conditions

Exciting research is currently being conducted via upright MRI showing how upper cervical adjustments affect various brain-based conditions.

Not only are MRI scans revealing that cerebral spinal fluid and blood flow are markedly increased after a chiropractic adjustment, researchers are observing that cerebellar invagination (when the cerebellum drops down below the skull line) is being reversed and brain plaquing (common in multiple sclerosis) is disappearing!  This shows the power of what chiropractors do!

Montel Williams (TV host), was interviewed about his experience as a MS patient under chiropractic care. It changed his life and there are numerous videos showing his dramatic results.

6. Blood Pressure

George Bakris,  who is the world expert on hypertension, published a study in 2007 with researchers in the Human Journal of Hypertension.  They proved that having one upper cervical chiropractic adjustment had the same effect as taking two blood pressure-lowering drugs. Even more fascinating, the effects of just one adjustment lasted more than six months!

Compared to the placebo-treated patients, saw an average 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count) and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number).

Other studies have shown similar findings with hypotensive patients, and their low blood pressure was raised to normal levels after chiropractic care. This is exciting because it highlights the body’s ability to create a homeostatic balanced environment once vertebral subluxations are removed. This is what DD Palmer was talking about when chiropractic was discovered in 1895.

7. Surgery Prevention

Chiropractic is always a good step to take if a patient has been referred for back surgery.

Now the Journal of the American Medical Association just published its low back pain guidelines and suggested that people suffering from back pain first try chiropractic before resorting to surgery.  This is not widely known by the public but should be so that many people avoid unecessary surgery and remain mobile and pain free.

8. Frozen Shoulder

Clinical trials have been published showing how patients suffering from frozen shoulder responded to chiropractic care.

Of the 50 patients: 16 resolved completely; 25 showed 75% to 90% improvement; eight showed 50% to 75% improvement; and one showed 0 percent to 50 percent improvement.

9. Scoliosis

Chiropractic adjustments for scoliosis coupled with muscular rehabilitation techniques may help prevent the progression of scoliosis. There are several trials out there that show significant improvements in the Cobb x-ray line which shows the angles of scoliosis several years after receiving chiropractic care.

10. Athletic Performance

Many athletes like Michael Phelps, Jerry Rice and Joe Montana have been under regular chiropractic care during and after their career.  In fact, over 50% of NFL teams have a chiropractor on staff.  It is now common for most athletic teams to have a chiropractor on hand to help with injuries and rehabilitation.   Studies have shown that chiropractic:

  • Reduces inflammatory cytokines
  • Boosts your immune system
  • Enhances pulmonary function
  • Decreases mental and oxidative stress
  • Relieves muscle tension
  • And can naturally increase your energy level

Studies have even proved, objectively and subjectively, that chiropractic patients experience “overall increased bodily function,” which includes bowl regularity and mental clarity.

Basically, because it helps place your body in the position where it can heal itself, chiropractic adjustments can free your immune system up to focus on keeping you healthy, which enhances your ability to think, move and perform.

Think chiropractic is just for neck and back pain….it can help but it is for allowing your body to use its innate capabilities and heal all on its own!
