Graston (S.A.S.T.M) and Active Release Technique

Active Release Technique (A.R.T.) is becoming very popular in body work.  Chiropractors and massage therapists are increasing its use for their clients.  It gets good results but I prefer to use Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (S.A.S.T.M.) in my practice.  I know, it is a mouthful, but it gets great results and it’s easy on the practitioner.   Both methods focus on releasing adhesions accumulated in the body and allow for proper healing and movement.

One big difference I like about S.A.S.T.M., is that the patient does not have to move the effected body part while instruments are supplied.  Sometimes a patient can barely move because of tightness or pain so why traumatize the area more when you don’t have to.  This method allows the patient to lay on the table and relax while the treatment is applied.   S.A.S.T.M. is also not painful like A.R.T.  I am sure you have heard the phrase “no pain, no gain” right?  Well in this case that phrase doesn’t apply.  There is no pain, but lots of gain!  I personally think that is a good thing.

Here is what happens during a session of S.A.S.T.M.  Carefully crafted instruments are applied to the area of scar tissue and with gentle pressure strokes over the area, they release scar tissue and knots that are stored in the body and cause dysfunction and/or pain.  After the application, patients feel less stress on the area, increased blood flow and better movement.

Another great feature with using S.A.S.T.M., is that the practitioner does not injure or strain their thumbs.  I have several chiropractic friends that tell me their thumbs are killing them after a busy day of A.R.T.  This does not happen with these special instruments.

If you have gotten A.R.T. in the past, try Graston or S.A.S.T.M.  You will feel great afterward!

SASTM (Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) what is it?

Soft tissue mobilization is used to treat a number of problems.  SASTM instruments are designed for treatment of soft tissue disorders.  These remarkable instruments effectively break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue helping your body to heal and create more movement in the body. The ergonomic design of these instruments provides the clinician with the ability to locate restrictions through sound waves. The unique design allows the clinician to treat the affected area with the appropriate amount of pressure, due to square surface of the instruments.

Trauma to soft tissue causes a local inflammatory response.  This initiates reabsorption of inappropriate fibers (scar tissue). During the treatment, the instruments breakdown scar tissue adhesions which may have developed as a result of surgery, immobilization, repeated strain or other mechanisms, are broken down allowing full functional restoration to occur.  This allows your body to move properly and put less stress on your joints.

This form of treatment is beginning to be used by colleges like Stanford to increase their performance.   To find out more about Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization check out this site

Burner Syndrome is more common than you think!

This injury is most common with football players but it can happen with anyone who falls onto their shoulder pushing their head to the opposite side of their body.  It can also occur when people stretch their neck muscles and nerves beyond their capacity.  Symptoms of burning or stinging pain in the shoulder or neck occurs.  It is often followed by pain which may radiate down to the arm or hand.  Numbness and weakness of the shoulder or arm may happen immediately or over time.

Treatment begins with icing the injury if there is edema and muscle therapy is begun after the swelling is down.  Low force chiropractic adjustments are greatly helpful and Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Therapy (S.A.S.T.M.) can improve movement of the neck and decrease the affects of scar tissue after the injury.

It is important to start rehabilitation quickly in order to keep motion in the neck and prevent stiffness which will make for a slower recovery.   Exercise programs to improve strength and flexibility are administered once the body is stable.

At Precise Moves Chiropractic we are very successful with burner syndrome and numerous sports injuries.  If you have hurt yourself, have limited motion or are not functioning at the level you would like, give us a call…we can help!
