Why do symptoms keep coming up when I have been doing really healthy things for a while now? I hear this all of the time. One thing to know is that a symptom may have been lurking for years and now after stressing your body’s systems for months, years or even decades, it has now presented itself.

Pain and symptoms can go away easily if you start making necessary changes in your life but just because you have a really good week doesn’t mean that the symptoms are gone for good. Lifestyle changes are necessary for long term results.

Think of dieting. If you diet for one month and lose a bit of weight but go back to your old eating habits, you will gain the weight back quickly. That is also how the body works. Even though you have eaten really well and even exercised a bit, once the body is stressed, it will present a symptom.

Wellness Care v. Sick Care. What is the real difference?

What is real wellness care?

Most people who live in the United States believe they are getting health care when purchasing an insurance plan or when using one.  Sadly, most insurance plans cover “sick” care.  Health care should focus on health, not on sickness.  

According to to Trust for America’s Health (TFAH), it has been proven that prevention is the main element to better health.  Disease prevention could save millions of people in the United States from pain and suffering.  It’s clear to see, if you are looking, published an article comparing the priorities in the American care system and that of Europe’s.

People want a system that allow them to stay well, not only treat them when they are sick.  Real wellness helps guide patients to healthy lifestyle choices that lead to a strong mind and body, not one that is dis-eased and low functioning.  Knowing what to eat and how to nourish the body, proper exercise, normal sleeping patterns,  stress relief or anything that may need to be modified to help each individual thrive as a person is real wellness. Being free from pain is not wellness, it is a holding pattern until bad habits lead to symptoms.  

Getting a dexascan, mammogram, annual exam are great to detect if anything is abnormal but finding out what is leading to any problems with the body is real prevention, health and wellness.  

According to the TFHA, americans are not as healthy as they used to be.  Rates of preventable problems like diabetes, stroke and heart disease are on the rise even though we know what causes them in most cases.  The U.S. has very high health care costs and because people are sicker (along with tons of mandatory paperwork).  

Healthy lifestyle prevention programs can help decrease costs at work, increase productivity and less days off from work.  Quality of life goes up and people are happier, energetic and more creative if they are healthy.  It can only take $10 per person per year in programs provided by the community to increase physical activity, help with nutrition and get people off of tobacco.  Doing this could save 16 billion dollars each year.  Yes, 16 billion dollars.  

Pesticides in our food, fast food, sedentary lifestyles, high stress at work and home are all leading to ill health and people are starting to think that having a headache from time to time is normal. It is not.  Digestive issues are rampant in the states and this is from the food we are eating not because our body doesn’t digest well when we get older.  Patients often tell me that pain is to be anticipated when getting older and it is not. Pain is a sign that something is wrong, not of old age.  

Staying healthy and well is hard work.  It takes dedication and education along the way.  Taking the time to give your body what it needs like bodywork, proper nutrition and exercise is a life long process.  It is work, but well worth it.  You and your body deserve it!

WebMD article states Chiropractic Cuts Blood Pressure!

In an article dated March 16, 2007, high blood pressure can be significantly decreased by a neck adjustment according to a control study.

Chiropractic treatment to the neck had the same effect as taking two medications for high blood pressure.  

George Bakris, MD, tells WebMD. “And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems,” adds Bakris, director of the University of Chicago hypertension center.

There were two groups in this control study.  One that were given real chiropractic treatment to the neck and others with what they referred to as a “sham” adjustment (not a chiropractic treatment).  8 weeks after the chiropractic treatments to the neck, 25 patients who had early signs of high blood pressure produces much lower blood pressure.  The other 25 “sham” patients did not.  

X-rays were taken and showed that the first bone in the neck called the Atlas was realigned with the real chiropractic treatment but not in the “sham” group of patients.

Real: Saw an average of a 14mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure and an average of 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure.  

Sham: no drop in blood pressure

In the article it was stated that “When the statistician brought me the data, I actually didn’t believe it. It was way too good to be true,” Bakris says. “The statistician said, ‘I don’t even believe it.’ But we checked for everything, and there it was.”

Why adjust the Atlas?

This bone holds up the head and is aligned with the brain stem.  

“At the base of the brain are two centers that control all the muscles of the body. If you pinch the base of the brain — if the Atlas gets locked in a position as little as a half a millimeter out of line — it doesn’t cause any pain but it upsets these centers,” Dickholtz tells WebMD.

Chiropractors Are Really Wellness Doctors!

Chiropractors understand that getting adjusted promotes increased immunity and general health.  Our profession has helped millions of people with not only musculoskeletal issues but other areas of the body, all without using drugs or surgery. In a international study involving hundreds of chiropractors and thousands of chiropractic patients, researchers sought to measure the incidence of non-musculoskeletal responses to chiropractic therapy. This study found that patients had systemic improvements even when they did not mention these upon examination. The most common systems that were effected were breathing (27%), digestion (26%) and circulation (21%). Blood pressure was shown to be decreased after treatment to the neck in another study.

So, though chiropractors help with neck and back pain, wellness and prevention is really what chiropractic does. We prevent surgery and can keep you healthy without the reliance of drugs! It just isn’t marketed that way because most articles and research has been focused on pain.

Dare To Dream? 5 Letters To Help You Gain Optimal Health

I was at the gym the other day and heard someone say their head was stuffy and they were tired.  They said they were sick.

Did you know that a “cold” is in your system for 3 days before you have a symptom?  So, this means that you were “sick” for 3 days before you even had a symptom appear.  Some of the ways our body’s react to an antigen in our system fights it off by sinus drainage, fever, vomiting, diarrhea.  So when we are feeling “sick” our body is actually working the way it should and is very healthy doing exactly what it needs to get this virus, bacteria etc. out of our body so it can function as it should.  A big problem occurs when people want to stifle this and take decongestants, anti-diarrhea medication.  What this does is allow this ailment to stay in the body longer leading to a decreased immune system.  I get it, we all have jobs but taking a sick day to take care of yourself is really necessary to regenerate or it can lead to being sick longer or having your symptoms increase making you unable to go to work at all.

So what is it to really being healthy, is it how we feel or how we function?

Health is really when all of our systems (reproductive, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, urinary, skin) are running optimally.  Not just when we are in pain or discomfort.  The symptoms come up after one of the systems has finally broken down from lifestyle stress.

Here are some examples of problems people have that they don’t think are health problems:

1. Insomnia – The brain doesn’t relax so the body doesn’t relax.

2. Fatigue: –  You get home from work and are exhausted, wake up but are still really “sleepy”.  You need coffee throughout the day to stay awake.

3. Frequent Aches and pains – Neck, back pain, headaches…everyone gets them right?  Not really, this is a sign of something not working right.

4. Digestive issues – Heartburn, acid reflux, constipation.  Your body needs the right foods, exercise and relaxation.  This is a sign that your organs are stressed.

5. Mood changes – Anger, negativity, worrying…this is a sign that you are under too much stress and you need to find a way to get rid of stress.

6. Skin issues – Hives, discolorations, bumps…this can be an allergy or stress related.

Doesn’t everyone have those things?  Well, no and even if it is common, it doesn’t mean it is normal or healthy.  We live in a society that eats out frequently, or if not eating out, eat foods with pesticides and additives.  We also sit for long hours at a time at a desk or in front of a television.  So, if there are a lot of people with the above mentioned, it is only because of our lifestyle.  These problems were not common to our grandparents.

Symptoms are our body’s alarm system telling us that something is wrong and letting us know that we need to lay off of something for a while.

Ignoring symptoms can lead to more serious problems.  You will probably notice your body giving you slight discomfort long before a full blown problem arises. Ignoring it won’t make it go away, it will only wait until it can’t take anymore and give you discomfort that you can not tolerate any longer.

So what is it like to DREAM with health?  Dream stands for

D: diet, digestion
R: Rest/good sleep
E: exercise
A: Alignment and Function
M: Mental health/relationships

These are all necessary for optimal health.  If any one of these areas are abused, the body will eventually respond.

I like to take the full-body approach to health and give guidance anywhere I can to help every one of my patients understand how every action they take in life will correlate with their health.  Once you know what to do to keep your body healthy, you will take the steps necessary to be able to work, spend time with family and enjoy life the way you should!

The only thing you are in control of is your health.  It is the most precious asset in your life.  Without it, you life will not be as full-filled as you would like and you may have to settle for a life that you did not envision.  The decisions and actions you decide on in life will either “make you” or “break you”.  Most people when I ask them what there goals are tell me excellent health.  Getting to excellent health takes hard work, dedication and time.  You are worth it!

How Can the Emotion of Love Help Your Life?

Let us start with defining love.  Here is what Webster Dictionary states as a definition of love:

1. A feeling of strong or constant affection for a person

2. Attraction that includes sexual desire : the strong affection felt by people who have a romantic relationship

3. A person you love in a romantic way

When this word is spoken to another person or felt from another person, it produces strong, visceral responses.  It is a word that can separate parents and children if not said enough, break up relationships if said too soon or not reciprocated.  It is a commonality that we all have around the world and is something cherished in every country.

Clearly love produces positive, happy emotions.  It can ward off stress, conflict and pain both mentally and physically. Love also has the power to heal and renew ones emotional well being. Research has shown that performing loving actions neutralize negative thoughts which can have an effect on the immune system, endocrine/hormones, and cardiovascular system.

There are many studies that have shown to help with cancer when patients have close healthy and happy relationships with their family.  Patients in loving relationships also were shown to recover quicker and in some cases cancer was eliminated all together.

Ever get “butterflies” in your stomach?  This is a visceral reaction a person gets when the body is connection with strong attraction that happens when a person is falling in love with someone.  The body responds with the mind.  That is incredible!  This shows how powerful the word and emotions is physically and emotionally.

3. Love leads to better health.

Studies have shown that patients involved in a loving, long-term relationship live longer than those who are not.   One reason is that people involved in a relationship typically don’t want to disappoint their partner by being ill or unable to live the lifestyle they are accustomed to.  Also, each partner person cares about the health of the other partner and if there is a health issue, they will convince you to go to the proper professional for evaluation.

Did you know that oxytocin is secreted in the system when a person feels loved?  This is an Endorphin that makes people feel good.  It also lowers the levels of stress chemicals in our system leading to better adaptability of your central nervous system leading to better health.

So, when we hug our kids, partner, siblings, grandparents, friends or whomever else we care about, we are actually helping them stay healthy and keeping ourselves healthy!

So, don’t refrain from giving love and showing love.  Everyone will benefit!

Make sure that you get your daily dose of hugs, affection, smiles and physical sexual activity whenever you can!

6 Tips To Reduce Stress

Stress is the cause of most of our problems.  Emotional stress (work, family), chemical stress (junk food, smoking) and physical stress (injury or repetitive movements) lead to physical ailments.  Keeping them at a minimum is key to staying healthy.  Here are some strategies that may make your life a bit easier!

1. Yelling…yes, I said it.  Yelling is a great way to get stress out that may be building up in your body.  You may want to find a place that is secluded or sometimes just do it in the car with the windows up and let the vocal cords go.

2. Get involved in something that is soothing.  Try and art project or even start gardening…even if you are not good at it.  Just relax and start, it is a great way to collect your thoughts

3. Go to a park, beach, look at the wonders of the earth.  It is a great way to appreciate life, get sun and breathe in oxygen.

4. Decrease some of your responsibilities if possible. Don’t commit yourself to things if it is too much of a time commitment.

3.  Forgive.  It is hard to carry anger around with you.  It is best to get rid of it and focus on enjoying life.

4. Don’t speed when driving.  You are in a stressed state when you do this and only bad things can happen here.

5. Don’t watch the news.  Unless it is a positive news station.  There is a lot of negativity going on in the news.  Believe me, people will talk about the news with you when you don’t watch it so you will be informed.

6. Try and hug people or tell them something positive, it works wonders for you and makes others feel awesome.

How Do Wellness Programs Help Companies Save On Health Costs?

In a story published to a March 11, 2002 issue of the American Medical News. This story reports on several studies and programs where corporate wellness programs are having a positive effect on reducing health care costs on their employees. “There’s a growing body of data indicating that corporate wellness programs lower medical costs for employees”, said Ron Z. Goetzel, PhD, vice president of consulting and applied research for the Medstat Group, a health care research firm in Ann Arbor, Mich.

A survey done by Medstat, published in the January 2002 issue of the Journal of Occupational Medicine, concluded that medical claims costs for Johnson & Johnson Inc. employees dropped an average of $225 per year after the company started its wellness program in 1995. Additionally, Goetzel reported that a literature review of corporate wellness studies published in the May/June 2001 issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion concluded that medical costs dropped for employees in the wellness program for 28 out of 32 of the corporate wellness programs reviewed.

The report claims that about 90% of Johnson & Johnson employees participate in the corporate wellness program. Their program consists of free health risk assessments and physicals. Additionally employees can then join free weight management, smoking cessation or nutrition classes and can use on-site fitness centers. John McKeegan, a Johnson & Johnson spokesman stated that the savings in reduced medical claims total about $5 million a year. When you factor in administrative savings from combining various health services into one program, McKeegan estimates the savings come to about $8.5 million a year.

The Wellness Councils of America, a coalition representing 3,000 corporate wellness programs, estimated that presently 80% to 90% of large U.S. corporations offer some sort of wellness program.

Would You Like To Have True Wellness? What Is Real Wellness?

What do Evander Holyfield, the heavyweight champion of the world, John Smoltz, the 1996 Cy Young award winner and Dan O’Brien, the 1996 Olympic Gold Medallist in the decathlon have in common? A 4.5 second 40 yard dash would make a fast running back, while a 5 second 40 yard dash would be an average time for a lineman. A baseball player batting .330 might win the batting title, while a player hitting .230 would get sent down to the minors.

Your brain takes in all the information from the environment and sends out signals which trigger the appropriate response by your body. As long as there is no interference to this system, the brain receives the correct signals and in turn sends out the correct response. Unfortunately, if there is interference to this pathway, it acts like static on a telephone line and all the body functions become reduced. Dr. Chung Ha Suh, a researcher out of the University of Colorado, found that 45mm. of a mercury pressure, roughly the weight of a quarter, is enough to reduce the function of that nerve to 40 percent of its original value. We’ve already seen the significance of 10%, can you imagine the effect of 40%? Removing this interference is a serious health issue.
